In the Milkyway@home science page, the statement "Recently, it was determined that the bulge contains a prominent bar." looks like Wikipedia-style vandalism because it implies that there is a place to get some food and alcoholic drinks in the Milky Way's bulge. Could an administrator look into the issue and plug any security holes to carry out this vandalism if they are discovered, or is there some meaning to the word "bar" that I do not understand? This is a repost from the website question and answers forum at http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=3454, because I am not sure that anyone is paying attention to that forum as the last post in there was around 4-5 years ago until I made my original post there. Please post replies there as that is the proper forum for this topic. |

The Milky Way is currently understood to be a barred spiral galaxy As in the shape of a bar, e.g a flat bar of metal ;) Posting here because you said the other forum is dead :P. The Milky Way is currently understood to be a barred spiral galaxy No this kind of 'barred': Definition of barred (adj) Bing Dictionary barred [ baard ] with stripes: having strips of color having bars attached: made of or equipped with bars closed: closed off. I am pretty sure they mean the 1st and 2nd ones...with stripes: having strips of color. As in a bar graph, but laying fairly flat and the bars going in arcs and viewing it as one would look at it from the side, similar to a sheet of paper seen edge on. With the paper being a half million or more light years thick. Remember they are talking UNIVERSE, so not teeny tiny, a billion light years is not an uncommon distance when talking UNIVERSE. |
