Updated to beta BOINC, but still not using the GPU :-(

I also confirm problem with 1.42 app: they run on CPU only (100% load on one CPU core, 0% load on GPU) seems like they runnining in OpenCL emulation mode
Also due to unexpected high CPU load severely disrupting work of other BOINC projects and BOINC work scheduler

So I abort all 1.42 WUs and set MW to "no new tasks" until its fixed.

P.S.
Windows 7 x64, AMD GPUs (HD 7870/7850)

Doesn't seem to be disrupting mine - I've got a quad core, but I only run 3 at a time anyway, to leave one to assist the GPU (otherwise some projects don't run the GPU at full speed).

You just said you were running the tasks on your CPU with no GPU util. That's the issue.

Yes, I'm not making use of my GPU. I was commenting on "due to unexpected ****high CPU load**** severely disrupting work of other BOINC projects"

Yes, i also try to keep one 1 CPU core idle to get max performance of GPUs apps. But this is exactly how current MW app disrupt it - BOINC think MW app uses only ~0.5 CPU core per one GPU task so start 2 MW GPU tasks on one CPU core. But in reality they use full CPU core each now, so all CPU cores work with 100% load include 1 core i reserved to support GPU work on other BOINC projects. Resulting in huge slowdown in processing GPU tasks of other BOINC projects.

It can be temporally fixed by modification of app_config file (to tell BOINC about MW use full CPU core per each task now), but it is app needed to be fixed, not users configs. In normal situation MW use less 0.5 CPU core (it jumps to 100% sometimes, but for short periods only)

Im getting a mixed bag of completions - both CPU and GPU. However, it seems that most of the tasks assigned as GPU are actually being completed and given credit for CPU. Not a single task has been completed as GPU in the last 12 hours. Also, since the 1.42s started showing up, my RAC count is falling

EDIT - I just went back through my Completed tasks - both Valid and Inconclusive ... the LAST task that was actually GPU completed was with v1.39. I have zero GPU completed tasks with v1.42

My "GPU" is completing them ok. I assume Jake will fix this shortly so it actually computes on it and not the CPU....

For now I just leave it to it so he can see what comes back.

I simply deselected "use GPU" on the Milkyway preferences page. So i only get CPU wus. Both GPUs are currently crunching Einstein wus. Hope Jake is back soon, to rectify things again. Yes, RAC is falling, cause no GPU is used for this project.

Your "GPU" is completing nothing. It's all on the CPU. That's what everyone is saying. No GPUs are being used with the new 1.42 WUs.

No one look GPU-Z like applications all your GPUs stay and rest in peace.
Your electric bill getting low and room temperature getting cool :)
You are in a dream guys Jake compile a dreaming application for your GPUs :)
But your CPUs running max for crunching OpenCL tasks.

That's the reason I put "GPU" in quotes - to indicate it was a GPU task not running on the GPU. I thought I was being quite clear.

My electric company recently rejected my self meter reading because they said it was too high and I couldn't have used that much. They didn't understand what BOINC was :-)

Call it what it actually is. GPU units are running on CPUs, in Windows. End of story.

Linux is working fine with v1.4 and I'm getting more production done than ever now that my 280x is staying busy.

Disable the GPU on the project website if you don't want the GPU tasks running on your CPU.

Hey Everyone,

Sorry I haven't been reading the forums. I have been working hard on getting the Windows GPU version running. I am going to do a rerelease as soon as I have working GPU versions. I have deprecated all of the Windows GPU applications in the meantime.

Thanks for info. :-)

BTW.
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/apps.php

My both PCs have Win8.1 x64 and the CPU 1.42 x64 app is running fine.
The CPU 1.40 x64 app made errors.

Just curious...
The CPU 1.40 x86 app is still online, this app is running fine?

Hi,

I am finding that multiple CPU WU's keep resetting back to 0% from 40+% completion.

I watched one set of WU's and it reset three times back to 0%, and started processing from the beginning again.

I have reset the project, and restarted the client, but it still keeps happening.

Regards,

Chris

AFAIK, this is currently normal, because there are 5 WUs now in 1 WU (*_bundle5_* in the WU name).
Everytime 1 WU finish of this 5 WUs, it begin again from 0%.
This happens 4 times and with calculation of the 5th WU it will finish to 100%.

I see the same with GPU WUs in Linux on an AMD and NV card.

Jeez, I thought it was obvious, what do you think I used the quotes for? The next sentence explained it even if you didn't understand. Nevermind....
