Simply put, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) was the most ambitious astronomical survey ever undertaken. It has provided detailed optical images covering more than a quarter of the sky, and a 3-dimensional map of about a million galaxies and quasars. http://www.sdss.org/ Isn't this what MW is trying to accomplish but only for the Milky Way? Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

We use the data gathered by the SDSS in our calculations for the MW@Home project. Surveys such as SDSS, SuperCOSMOS, 2MASS etc. each provide huge databases of star points used by astronomers, but do very little interpretation of the data. The interpretation is left to research astronomers. They provide the star points, we make sense of them. -John Vickers |
