Is Milkyway doing actual work at the moment or are we still in an alpha / beta phase where most of the crunching is to test the application and we're not doing any real science? |

Is Milkyway doing actual work at the moment or are we still in an alpha / beta phase where most of the crunching is to test the application and we're not doing any real science? I believe actual data is supposed to be being crunched. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

Theres a list of scientific papers published on the work we've done on the front page. |

The debris is located at (!; "; R) ¼ (31:37" # 0:26"; 0:0"; 29:22 # 0:20 kpc), with a (spatial) direction given by the unit vector ($0:991 # 0:007 kpc; 0:042 # 0:033 kpc; 0:127 # 0:046 kpc), in galactocentric Cartesian coordinates, and with FWHM ¼ 6:74 # 0:06 kpc. This 2.5" wide stripe contains 0.9% as many F turnoff stars as the current Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. WTF ! The papers are great... but most of us aren't astrophysicists. I think what all these BOINC groups need to understand is that all we're asking for is some sort of visual or written progress of the project(s) we have chosen. In other words, a brief explanation of what the papers mean... written for the rest of us. I saw in one of the other posts a comment that if you were looking for a screensaver then you were participating for the wrong reason. I would submit to that person that IF the projects that provide visual feedback (IE screensaver) gets more participants. Would it not make sense to put on your taped glasses and get working on one? |

Each wu is only a part of what is being looked for in each grouping or section of the sky. So a real-time screensaver is not possible. All the data must be put together to form any visual and I don't believe the project is near mapping yet. The project's goal is to map the Milky Way. With only a few students doing anything for this project a screensaver (at all) is near the bottom. Most uses don't seem to have much interest in a screensaver as it take computing power away. So maybe you should not criticize the project when you don't know enough. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |
