I did not post this previously per Misfit's request, but I was provoked again today so I wrote out the Fairy tale and will now post it here because he did ask nicely ... And though I did not want to write it out at that time ... well, provoking the dragon can be one way to make the tea ... but is not always the wisest way to get hot water ... Remember, this is only a story ... It goes like this ... Once upon a time there was a system that was very confusing ... And there arose a clamor for clarity and documentation of this system ... The kingdom's scroll repository was thinly filled and the scrolls were written in an obscure language not normally spoken by the people of the kingdom. It was a language spoken only by wizards and magi of the most obscure sects of the wider lands ... And LO! A stranger appeared... acting oddly, but working hard and over time a large repository of information was collected in one scroll repository ... the old scrolls were interpreted and new ones added and for the most part they were understandable by the average citizen of this glorious kingdom, and the stranger labored and toiled, collecting information and translating long into the night ... and when scroll depository was relatively complete this stranger petitioned the King that this repository be made into the official repository of the land ... and the King hemmed, and the King hawed ... and set conditions upon the strange stranger ... which he met, one after the other... and each time the stranger succeeded in meeting the King's demands the King would make a new demand on the stranger so he would have to revise all the existing scrolls to make them acceptable to the King ... only to find that the King would set forth new conditions as each of the old were met ... After a month of increasingly petty complaints it became obvious that the issue was not the content of the scrolls or the accuracy of the data within them ... it was that the stranger might be credited with writing the scrolls and thereby diminishing the King in some fashion ... the last and most baffling condition made by the King that all the existing work should be burned and that the scrolls be written completely fresh ... after all, it was only four years of accumulated work to write the old scrolls, how hard could it be to start over again? The other, and more troubling demands by the King was that the scrolls should only be written so that they would be understandable by the wizards and magi of the kingdom ... and only about a few of the topics, most subjects were considered by the King to be anathema for why should the explanation of the system include information about its actual intended use... should not the explanation of the system only extend to the limits of the basic system itself ... not how the citizen might best use it? ... of course, with these limitations the common citizen would have little use for the scrolls as most of the information they would be seeking would not be contained within the depository ... and the wise men would likely never read the scrolls because of their vast knowledge, wisdom and learning ... but all in all, the new repository constructed by the stranger could be successfully pared down and made to look EXACTLY like the King's OLD repository ... Saddened and depressed the stranger left the kingdom and there they sit, even today, empty and abandoned by all, the scroll depositories, growing increasingly outdated as there is no one to update the scrolls with fresh new information... but the King's glory, such as it is, remains intact ... after all, why would anyone want to make the lore of the magi understandable to the commoners of the kingdom? Now you tell me boys and girls, who lived happily ever after? How is that for a fairy tale? Or was it reality? |

Excellent story. I, for one, am copying this lest it be modded! Paul, you really have been a stallwart that has help keep the fabric of BOINC woven. I hope you will keep up the great work. I really don't have your patience for what you have been doing. Excellent stuff! |

Excellent story. I, for one, am copying this lest it be modded! Thank you for the kind thought. Alas, once more I am seeing the effects and for the second week in a row am having trouble walking again ... not good ... Those guys in the greek legends had it easy... those tasks were trivial compared to getting a code change in BOINC... |

Misfit wanted the Fairy tale I'm glad the word "tale" was written into the subject line. This sounds almost like a "Wizards and Warriors" fairy tale I read once. I bet you authored that too for the writing skills of the other weren't up to par. I'm sure I have your original files on a disk somewhere... just lying around... perhaps waiting to be turned into the BOINC UNWIKI someday... :D me@rescam.org |

To be honest i would let it rest, The Evil King won't ever change. If you come to near his land, he bites your head off or at least will try. |

Misfit wanted the Fairy tale The UBW is still alive in the sense that it is available still ... just not at my old domain. I don't maintain it or contribute ... but it is still there and the content is still mostly correct. Though as time passes ... I don't want anyone to fail, I would like us all to succeed ... sadly that does not seem to be the goal of all of us ... |

I don't want anyone to fail, I would like us all to succeed ... It compels me to want to change the channel. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

I don't want anyone to fail, I would like us all to succeed ... You must let me know where to get one of those. A gecko running all over my screen to add to my cats constantly walking in front of it would be just wonderful :) |

Such a small kingdom. World-wide citizenship of a mere 1,716,362 people. Apparently, not much glory and homage is being paid. |
