Hey, nobody's saying nothing could possibly happen in 2012 - who knows, maybe the probability of a big solar flare heading towards earth -is- higher than normal in that year. But it's a bit of a stretch to say the Mayans, a primitive culture dead for thousands of years not only predicted that a big solar flare would happen in 2012, but that we would have electronic devices that they knew nothing about that make us vulnerable to it! All they did was make an interesting observation about the sky and tuned their calender to it - it's not surprising such an event might be interesting for a variety of reasons we're starting to understand today, but that doesn't mean they had magical prophetic powers. Oh, and have you heard of the null hypothesis? The burden of proof is on the people making the claim, not the other way around. (I saw a flying unicorn yesterday! Go on, prove it isn't true!) |

Emanuel, exactly right! Stuff happens. Lots of bad things are going to happen! Absolutely no question about that! The question is whether you pick rational thought, empiricism, and science, or magical thinking and shamanism. And we all do both. Even Einstein blew off rationality for magic in some areas. The real trick is looking deeply enough into the mirror to figure out what you're doing and keep a close eye on yourself. Now....The Tower covered by the Page of Swords, reversed. What the...? |

And thats where google becomes your friend. To start with you have to look at the natural disarsters that could happen on or around the date of 21 dec 2012. 1. Solor Flares yes i think we can really say yes this is going to happen because it has been confurmed by NASA and Harverd white papers. 2. Super Volcanos and earthquakes well yes maybe and maybe not. There are three places round the world that look like could turning in Super Volcanos on or around that time and they are YELLOWSTONE, MOUNT ST HELENS and a third in Asia which i can on remmeber but is in the area of the December 2004 tsunami. Note that these are only maybes and even the geolagis are don't really know. 3. Planet X what a load of rubbish even NASA said that this one is a hoax the only comet or large meteor that could cause and problems would be one in 2024 that the will only be a near miss Smoke me a kipper ill be back for breakfast |

Hello MW@Home and ztmike:
I'm pretty sure that my facts are straight :P, that website he linked stating he got information from it is actually made by Sony. The scientists and "facts" featured therein are entirely fictitious and created to bring publicity to the movie. Check the bottom of the webpage for publication info :) I can also Google "The Montauk Project" or "The Philadelphia Project" or "The Jersey Devil" or "HAARP" or "Chemtrail Theory" and get a lot of very nice information. That doesn't mean that I believe every disturbing thing I see :) Cheers, John Vickers |

As an update. Personal i don't think that this a marketing scheme for the move 2012 Roland Emmerich got some of his inspiration by Zecharia Sitchin and than went on producing the movie.. He has stated on BBC during an interview that he was a fan of Sitchin since he released The 12th Planet book....I'm not sure whats going to happen on 2012 and i have a feeling that probably nothing is going to happen but what you are saying is just wrong get the facts right before you start making statements like this. pitbull training pitbull history |

What makes the whole notion preposterous to me on its face is that the disc of the Galaxy is some thousands of parsecs thick; the solar system has spent its entire history in the disc, having made a couple dozen orbits since it was formed. The galactic equator has no more physical significance than Earth's -- less, as a matter of fact, because it's pretty arbitrarily defined, more like the constellation boundaries, and certainly not an 'object' that we'll 'pass through'. |

Due to the unusually long solar minimum that the sun is just leaving, solar scientists are now predicting a mild solar maximum sometime in the year 2013: http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2009/29may_noaaprediction.htm There are errors on this, of course, just as there were errors on the previous, energetic solar maximum prediction. But this prediction represents the most likely scenario, with current data. Doesn't mean we won't have a big solar storm in 2012, but we could also have one next week, too. I was talking to an anthropologist friend of mine, and the "end" of the Mayan Long Count is not actually Dec 20, 2012; this date is the end of the 13th B'ak'tun (long cycle), with the 14th cycle beginning on Dec 21st. Given that the Mayan calendar works on a base 20 system, the true "end" of the long count will be in the year 4772. Even then, the Mayan calendar has four longer (also base 20) cycles, so we would just roll over to the first piktun (next higher-order cycle). The confusion arises when one reads Mayan mythology - they believe that the last incarnation of the world ended on it's 13th b'ak'tun (3114 BC). However, Mayan mythology, as written on artifacts, also predicts certain events that would occur after our 13th b'ak'tun (2012). I is obvious that the Mayans never thought that this world would end in 2012. So if you are willing to believe that the entire world was destroyed and re-created in 3114 BC, and somehow figure that our world will have the same lifespan as the "last one," then go ahead and worry about 2012. I, for one, will not. |

I remember I saw a news on TV in 2000-s that shows me crazy people who run, scream that they will be doomed and buy tons of food, water, flashlights, batteries and other must-have-survival stuff. That was FUN. I think, we will see the same show in 2012, I hope :) |

The most interesting thing about 2012 is that we should be hitting solar maximum around that time. This is a period of increased activity from the sun as the magnetic field becomes twisted. It happens once every 11 years or so, and it hasn't wiped out humanity any time in the recent past. :o) I wouldn't be overly concerned at this stage. |

Hi Travis and the rest of the guys. We wouldn't have to put up with this nonsense if the Mayans had used a bigger stone. |

Hi Travis and the rest of the guys. They did use a bigger stone. See my post below. :)
New prediction for solar maximum is mid 2013: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2009/29may_noaaprediction/ The real issue here is that a massive solar flare could seriously damage our electronic infrastructure - which large parts of our economy are tied into. I wouldn't worry about civilization falling, though - there are still plenty of people around who remember how to do things sans computers. :) |

Even then, the Mayan calendar has four longer (also base 20) cycles, so we would just roll over to the first piktun (next higher-order cycle). This has been known in Anthropology circles for a while but is not convenient information for the current crop of doom-and-gloomers and sensational news feeds. Also amusing is that if the Mayans were so great at predictions, why weren't they able to predict their own demise a relatively short time later? The 2012 "theory" is ridiculous. The chance of disaster is the same as for any other year. Every few years someone sets a new date for "The End" and the same people go into their current state of panic. Apparently they need the drama in their lives... |

Apparently they need the drama in their lives... I think you are on to something, but I thought I knew better than to come in here. anyway, lots of interesting info with much thought provoking sentiment, so I pose we meet here again come 2013 and talk about 2060. what a minute, that's no fun. 2060 is too far out for some of us to enjoy. how'bout, I think 2021 (12 backwards!!...or is that reversed?!) has a relevant eerie something about it, biggish consecutive scariness--right around the corner. 2021x2 is 4042, oooh, divide by 3.pie and to a factor of something and the mass of the solar system is in there somewhere, growing. throw in a cme some how sparked by a fly purge in south africa, KABOOM! since the average man, today, has much more understanding of the feel/need-sical world, ok, maybe a gumbi stretch, than those of the mayans--DOPERS!, why not? let's all pose a doomsday year. average man here says, 2021, babe. YYY? if this silly sod's unrefined effort to inject more humor into this discussion disappoints annoys or even angers, get over it or I might change loonsyear to 2011!! |

... Placing wires under the ocean made no difference. In the Atlantic cable between Scotland and Newfoundland, 2,600-volt surges were recorded during a magnetic storm in March 1940. Short-wave broadcasts often were blocked for hours, and "technical difficulties" were expected and even jokingly tolerated. Some effects of solar storms were far beyond the nuisance level, especially at higher latitudes. In August 1972, a 230,000-volt transformer at the British Columbia Hydroelectric Authority blew up when shifting magnetic fields induced a current spike. On March 13, 1989, a storm plunged Quebec into a complete power blackout, affecting millions. ... http://solar.physics.montana.edu/press/WashPost/Horizon/196l-031099-idx.html
